Milia. Those pesky little hard white bumps.

Let's talk about Milia. Those hard white bumps on your face that drive you crazy. Most commonly found around the eye area. The forehead too. It can affect any skin type. Oily, dry, combination, rosacea.

So what causes Milia? Let's talk.

It has everything to do with hydration. Or should I say, LACK of hydration. It takes a long to time develop, to appear.   We are losing water constantly from the epidermis, the uppermost section of our skin. The drier the climate, the faster we lose water.

In the epidermis we have oils and water. A bi-layer system. Each enabling and supporting the others functions. When we don’t have enough water in the skin the oils crystallize, forming milia.

Banish The Milia
So whats the best way to help diminish these little white bumps? Hydration is the key. Drinking those 8 glasses of water each day and using a topical product that will provide hydration. Hyaluronic Acid is my number one choice. It holds 1000 times its own weight in water and when combined with the correct lipids (oils) it can really work wonders. The lipids and ceramides are important. They will hold that Hyaluronic acid in the skin and help prevent evaporation.

I’ve had great results with Skin Scripts Ageless Skin Hydrating Serum. I LOVE this product!
It’s a multitasking serum. The Ageless Skin Hydrating Serum can be used to firm and plump fine lines. Hyaluronic attracts and binds moisture around cells for extra hydration. Add it to your SkinScript moisturizer, layer it under your moisturizer or use alone if you have an oilier skin.  Perfect for dry skin, as an eye serum, for treating milia and is great to hydrate acneic skin.

BONUS! It also contains Matryxl Synthe-6 which helps to inhibit contraction of facial muscles to help with wrinkling. Enough said!

The Ageless Skin Hydrating Serum is a powerhouse! Use twice a day (you can go all the way to the lash line). In one to two months, that would be two 28-day cell cycles, the milia will begin to soften and be re-absorbed. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

Hope this helps. If you are interested in using the Ageless Skin Serum you will find it in my online store on my website  myinnerglowskincare.com. Or you can stop by the studio and pick one up.

Okay gorgeous.

Stay beautiful and I’ll see you next time.

DIET AND YOUR SKIN

SUPERFOODS.
Juicing & Smoothies For Glowing Skin

We all want perfect skin, don’t we? We spend time and money on lotions, potions, and facials to achieve just that. A lot of times though, what we neglect to consider is what we are feeding our skin, and bodies, from within. Our skin truly is a reflection of our inner health.
One of the easiest ways to improve the health and glow of your skin is to include a raw fruit and veggie smoothie in your daily diet.
Packed full of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, not only nutritious, it’s a delicious way to up your superfood intake.  Try it for a month. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the extra glow to your skin.

There’s no one recipe. I change mine up all the time. Pick your favorite fruits, add a couple veggies like spinach, kale, beetroot (just a little because beets have a strong flavour), celery then blend away and you’re set. I add a little organic coconut oil with a few cashews or almonds and vegan yogurt to give a richer, creamier texture. You name it. If you love it throw it in. Not only will this encourage beautiful glowing, healthy skin it will help to detox your body and is an excellent energy booster.

DIET AND ACNE
  • Eliminate dairy.
  • Include plant-based DHT Blockers.*
  • Avoid synthetic multivitamins.
  • Megadose on superfoods, focusing on fruits and veggies high in fibre, zinc and hormonal balance.
  • Eliminate inflammatory foods, for example, animal proteins, also food allergens such as gluten and dairy.
  • Include prebiotics and probiotics for a healthy gut.

*DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) is a potentially negative type of testosterone-like hormone linked to hair loss in men and women as well as acne. DHT can increase oil production in the skin and also exacerbate inflammation, a combination that leads to blocked pores. A blocked pore with limited oxygen creates a perfect breeding ground for the p-acne bacteria.

DHT Blockers:
Natural: Pumpkin seeds, stinging nettle, peppermint leaves, Green tea.
Medications: Spironolactone, Drospirenon.

Inflammatory Foods
Dairy, animal proteins, processed foods, sugars.

Exfoliation. What's The Big Deal?

Oh.  It's a Big Deal!

I’m asked all the time about exfoliation. Some do it, some don’t. Some over do-it while others not enough. Mostly I find people are using a product or method unsuitable for their skin type and condition.
If you come to see me for skin care you know I LOVE exfoliation. All kinds of exfoliation. Why is it so important you ask? Let me enlighten you.

Our skin cells turn over every 28 days. As we age this natural process slows down dramatically. The build up of dead cells on your face will give you a gray, ashy tone making your skin appear dull and tired. No glow! Oh no! 😬 This build up of cells can also clog pores, and prevent your skin care products from penetrating and being as effective as they could be.
The flip side of this is over-exfoliating. Too much of a good thing… is not a good thing. Too much exfoliation or overly harsh methods and/or products will cause inflammation and irritation, sometimes causing breakouts. Back off chica! A little exfoliation goes a long way and shouldn’t leave you red and sensitive.

The appropriate exfoliation will not only remove the layers of dead cells it will encourage new cells to be produced, at a faster rate. With old cells removed the new plump, healthy cells will be visible on the surface of your skin… and Voila! You glow!! 😍

There are so many types of exfoliation to choose from. (I can help you with this) Here are a few most commonly used.

SCRUBS
We are all familiar with these.  When choosing a manual method, AKA a scrub, be sure the particles that do the actual scrubbing are soft and rounded. Nut shells and the like will leave minuscule scratches. We don’t want that. Typically those with sensitive skin, active acne, visible capillaries (blood vessels) are better off not using a scrub. Used correctly and carefully they can be a great and affordable method. Certainly the most popular. The trick is finding a gentle scrub formulated with ingredients that offer benefits for your specific skin type and condition.

ENZYMES
Derived from most commonly from fruits. Papaya, pineapple, pumpkin, blueberries, etc. It’s actually the bacteria in enzymes that cause the exfoliation. They digest dead skin cells and don’t mess with the live cells. I love enzymes. They can be formulated to be super gentle or as in some professional products, as aggressive as some chemical peels. You'll find them added to cleansers, scrubs and masks, serums and creams. So very versatile.

ACIDS/AHA'S
Glycolic, Lactic and Salicylic are the most commonly found in home-care products. You can find them in creams, lotions, gels and serums as well as cleansers and scubs. They all have a specific reaction on and within the skin. Glycolic is a good all around acid. Anti-aging and acne, these are two conditions that Glycolic Acid treats really well. Lactic Acid, from milk, is a milder, hydrating acid. It allows for exfoliation while facilitating hydration.  Nice Combo!  Salicylic Acid is wonderful in acne treatments, especially oily acne.  Yes.  There is such a thing as dry (skin) acne!

Two very popular products at Inner Glow Skin Care are the Skin Script Glycolic and Retinol Pads and the Clarifying Toner Pads. Easy to use and great results.

Eyebrow Envy!

We all have them. Or at least we should. Some of us have two, some have one big one. Some have fat ones, thin ones, long ones, short ones. Some are half moon ones. Some dark some light. Some look like sisters, others look like cousins. Distant cousins! They rarely look like they might be twins though. At least not without some intervention.

What am I talking about? Eyebrows!! (If you have one big one… call me. NOW!)

Eyebrows are the frames to our eyes, the windows to our soul. They are a pretty big deal. They help convey amusement, frustration, anger, surprise. The wrong shape can make eyes appear smaller, too close together, too far apart or cause you to look permanently surprised or frowning. The correct shape will seem to lift your face, enhance and frame your eyes whether they be soft and natural, super defined and edgy, or strong and bold. Need a little help? Pencils and powders are your friends (powders are much more forgiving). They can help fill in gaps, add a little length and give more definition and wow for a night out.

I have very sparse eyebrows. I think that’s why I so love to work on other peoples. I have eyebrow envy. I have butt envy too but that’s a whole other blog!

When Will It All Go Away?

When will I look better?  When will 'it' go away?

I hear this question, or a variation of, almost every day. When will I see results? When will this brown spot disappear? When will my breakouts stop? I have a date tonight, will these wrinkles be gone?

I get it. When I had acne I wanted it gone NOW! Yesterday!! I was so frustrated! I wanted to leave my facial appointment with unblemished, clear skin. My esthetician at the time didn’t explain that it would be a process, or the importance of home care, diet and ‘clean’ makeup.

We all want instant results. Unfortunately, immediate dramatic results are rare when it comes to our skin. Not to say it can’t happen. Dermaplaning for instance, gives immediate smoothness, softness and a gorgeous fresh vitality to your skin. It's one of my most requested services.   Microcurrent/Non-Surgical Face Lift gives immediate subtle lift, firmness and a glow. A single facial will always leave your skin looking better. Just remember, when treating progressive signs of aging, sun-damage or neglected skin, it takes time, dedication and consistency. Your wrinkles, fine lines, brown patches and loss of firmness didn’t happen overnight. It likely won't get dramatically better overnight. Most of us need several treatments; sometimes a variety of treatments.  And, the older we are, the more time it will take. Truth hurts, huh? The most impressive results are seen after a series of specifically chosen treatments and carefully selected home care.

So yes. You will look better. But it takes commitment. It takes patience. Allow your skin time to respond to treatments and home skin care.   No matter our age, that glow we all desire is just a few appointments away :-)
